Add New Cutting Boards to Your Spring Cleaning List: Here's Why

Posted on

Spring is here and with it, spring cleaning! It's time for kitchens everywhere to get a deep clean, which can often mean replacing items that are worn down. While some items in the kitchen can last years and years, HDPE cutting boards, when used daily, should really be replaced every 6-12 months. If you're close to hitting that time limit, or far over it, it might be a good idea to add getting a new cutting board to your spring cleaning list.

Plastic (HDPE) cutting boards are a great option for commercial kitchens because they are easy to clean in the dishwasher and, with all the different color options, you can color coordinate your kitchen to eliminate cross-contamination. However, the lifetime of a plastic cutting board is typically only around 6 months to a year before it needs to be replaced. Here are a few reasons to replace your cutting boards:

Loss of Surface/Texture

Plastic cutting boards are made with a specific surface to make sure it catches your knives and does not cause them to slip, especially when you're on a time crunch and chopping quickly. Over time, though, the surface of your plastic cutting board will eventually wear down and can become slippery for your knives.

Although it seems easy, sanding your plastic cutting boards to "resurface" them is not the answer. To find out more of the dangers of resurfacing your plastic cutting boards, click here

Keep Your Kitchen Clean

As you lose the texture of your cutting board and begin to see significant knife marks on it, bacteria can begin to breed in the small crevices made by your knives. Even putting your plastic cutting boards through the dishwasher for an intense cleaning does not necessarily rid your board of the bacteria that grows in those tiny spaces.

Replacing your plastic cutting board in the appropriate time can eliminate exposure to these different bacterias in your food. Similar to what we stated above, sanding your board to get rid of those knife marks can actually create even smaller scrapes on the surface for bacteria to breed in.
